BMW Scrambler Projects
This post follows a project that is decades in the making.
It begins with a small company (at the time) called Deus Ex Machina. They invited both Dean and I to the Deus Bike Build Off and we were judges at the event, of course we made a mission out of it and rode the long way round from Geelong to Sydney through the rain and snow. This was the first time either of us had anything to do with a production Scrambler.
It was the coldest I have ever been but we had a bunch of good times along the way. The bikes impressed us and we had a hard time giving them back to BMW.
The industry was driving a lot of this at the time and the combination with Dean as a photographer and myself as a builder/ rider took us many places.
The quest to harness big heavy torque monsters in environments they were never designed for got a little adictive. I picked up this brand new BMW R Nine T Scrambler and was asked to ride it to QLD for an event called Dust Hustle where Dean and I would produce a photoset and write up on our adventure.
I had done a lot of things on motorcycles but this was a highlight.
Once at DustHustle I met up with Zye Norris and we chased each other round the QLD Moto Park having the time of our lives.
I probably pushed this bike a little too hard and subsequently did some damage, it was enough for BMW to sell it to me for next to nothing, remeber this bike as it will pop up later in this post.
The crazyness continued the following year with another BMW for Dust Hustle QLD, this time an R18, that’r right an 1800cc bike for the dirt.
If you have time to burn and looking to learn about the process of making Titanium exhausts then check this 3 Part series out.
It’s also worth checking out if you ever want to weld Titanium.
Get anytime access to the best Fabrication Courses, learn the staple skills of fabrication all the way through to roll cages and turbo manifolds.
How did go? Well due to Covid I couldnt get up to the event but I was able to test it out at my local airfield. I think this answers the question……. Good!
Another year went by which meant another Dust Hustle Project began.
This was a refinement on the last and BMW managed to sell it after Dust Hustle.
This video will run you through the modifications made.
The bike went well and I didnt die, good times!
Remember way back in the post where I had to buy that R Nine T I rode at Dust Hustle QLD? Well I got another invite to go back, this time it was on my terms and I wanted to take the same bike that started it all, but with a few modifications.
This 5 Part series will take you through the entire build.
A registered dirt bike that has the torque and power to go anywhere is the dream.
I had a blast on this bike and will continue into the future. There’s something about modifying big capacity bikes to ride terrain they were never designed for, it’s about creeping up to the limit but never going over it or else these big things could do some real damage.
Cheers to the good times on two wheels!
